Ellery began as a hair designer at Defining Image in 2001 and now is co-owner of the salon. While training as a stylist he made a point to enrich his technical skills through multiple outside courses in cutting and color. This gave him a “head start” when he began his career as a stylist. Along this personal path toward higher and higher levels of competence, he received certification through National Goldwell Color Alliance Program, KMS Foundations Haircutting, and as a Master Colorist in 2003. Keeping his training up to date, through ongoing advanced cut, color and styling classes with award-winning stylists, and paying attention to current fashion, he specializes in advanced cutting and coloring.
Ellery focuses on the importance of the consultation between himself and his clients. He uses this opportunity to draw out what his client actually likes about the styles they are requesting. He gives concrete suggestions about different options that will work for them personally in achieving what they want. Marshaling these communication and technical skills, he aims for his clients to feel relaxed and have a sense of being in competent hands at Defining Image Salon.
After many years as an art student studying the color wheel, Nichole discovered her natural talent for color theory and turned her attention to hairstyling. Her career took off, and she is now the co-owner of Defining Image Salon, showing people how they can have the hair they have always wanted. Not only does she enjoy creating rich dimensional color that looks natural, she specializes in curly hair, showing how anyone can use the right products and styling to evoke their amazing natural curl.
Nichole is certified as a curly hair specialist and a Keratherpy smoothing specialist. Beginning with Goldwell, KMS, and Aveda (where she worked prior to joining Defining Image), she keeps her skills up to date with advanced cut, color and styling classes with Global Creative Directors for Goldwell and other Artistic Directors. She keeps a keen eye on current fashion, with her hands firmly on the techniques to bring them to life.
Defining Image provided Nichole with the opportunity to work with certified master colorists, continue her advanced education with some of the biggest names in the industry, and enjoy a relaxed work environment with a group of people that helped push her critical thinking to a higher level. She strives to make the salon a place where clients feel a real connection to their stylist, built on a solid foundation of trust.
Graduating beauty school in 2007, Maria began her stylist career in a trendy local Portland barbershop doing fun, funky short hairstyles. She keeps up with cutting trends, has an abiding interest in evolving hair fashion trends, but she longed for an opportunity to learn more about color and found her way to Defining Image in 2009. Working with two stylists certified as master colorists, Maria immediately resonated with the Defining Image team, as they did with her. She still excels with short hair, but can show any of her guests how to get the most out of their hair (no matter curly, straight, thick or thin). She builds confidence in her guests that they can style their hair in a way that is easy for them.
Maria’s certifications include Keratherapy Smoothing Specialist and she regularly takes cut and color classes with notable style luminaries, Artistic and Creative Directors and NAHA award winners. This is the backstory to her skill as a stylist, while her aim is for her guests to truly enjoy being in the salon…to come right in, sit right down, relax and unwind. She focuses on building a lasting relationship with her guests who look forward to getting their hair done.
Christina has wanted to be a hairstylist for as long as she can remember. She loves meeting different people, forging new relationships, and witnessing the “before” and “after” effect of hair styling. Mostly she loves the way the new style brings out the confidence in her clients. Hair, she says, is her preferred medium for creativity.
Christina began her career as a hairstylist, after completing a university degree. She got her cosmetology training at the Aveda Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As an industry, hairstyling is ever changing and her styling techniques are ever evolving as well. She continued her training with cutting classes at Vidal Sassoon and Pureology, color classes, and trend classes, among others. When clients meet her at Defining Image, Cristina will create a stress free zone, where they feel free to ask questions, quietly sip a glass of wine or cup of tea, and enjoy watching their look being transformed.
Kaleena joined the hairstylist team at Defining Image Salon in 2014. She has always enjoyed styling hair and never felt like it was “work.” Having grown up with the typical Barbie doll, she was more interested in the hair than the clothes. Kaleena loves being in the ever-evolving hairstyling industry, learning new techniques and changing her client’s looks in a matter of hours.
Kaleena has multiple recent certifications, having taken classes in both master and creative color techniques, both texture and prom styling, shine finishing, and extensions. At Defining Image Salon she wants to give her clients great hair and a great experience at the same time.
